Bernard Wheaton studied at the University of Southern Queensland graduating with a Bachelor of Creative Arts and a Diploma in Music. He was a Member of the Opera Queensland Young Artist Program Moving Opera! and has performed with Opera Australia. Bernard currently teaches singing at Moreton Bay College.
For Opera Queensland Bernard has performed Benoir and Parpignol in La Bohème, Pony Express Rider in The Girl of the Golden West, Beppe in Pagliacci, Giuseppe and Gaston in La traviata, First Prisoner in Fidelio, First Speaker in The Magic Flute, La Bate in Andrea Chénier, Doctor Blind in Die Fledermaus, Borsa in Rigoletto, and was soloist on the Opera Chorus CD with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra as well as in the Mozart Requiem.
Bernard has been a member of the Opera Queensland Chorus since 1995, performing in Madama Butterfly, Lucia di Lammermoor, The Magic Flute, Otello, Turandot, Samson et Dalila, Die Tote Stadt, Don Pasquale, Die Fledermaus, Falstaff, The Elixir of Love, Il trovatore, The Damnation of Faust, Cinderella, Andrea Chénier, Tosca, Carmen, La Traviata, and The Mikado. For Opera Australia’s Chorus Bernard has performed in The Love for Three Oranges, Tosca, Die Fledermaus, Nabucco, The Magic Flute, La Bohème, Don Giovanni, Romeo and Juliet, H.M.S. Pinafore/Trial By Jury, and Tosca in the Domain.
Other engagements include Mr. Erlanson in A Little Night Music, Alchemist, Sultan Achmet and Crook in Candide and Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni (4MBS Festival of Classics). Bernard’s solo concert repertoire includes Mozart’s Requiem, Schubert’s Mass in G and The Ancient Mariner, Haydn’s The Seasons, Handel’s Messiah, and Mendelssohn’s Elijah.
In 2020/21 Bernard performed for Opera Queensland’s ‘An Aria a day’, An Afternoon of English Art song with Enharmonic and was the Tenor Soloist in the Messiah for the Bach Society.
